You’re a family of four, or more, in Queens, New York City. You’re looking for a place to go where you can all hang out and have fun together as a family. - Barnes and Noble Bookstore Forest Hills, 70-00 Austin St, Forest Hills, NY, 718-793-1395. It’s completely free, not only to browse together for hours and hours, but also to read to your kids from one of the myriad of children’s books on the well-stocked shelves. At this and other Barnes and Noble stores, in Bayside, Bay Terrace, Fresh Meadows, and more, there are often kids’ events that the whole family can enjoy together. - Queens Zoo, 53-51 111th Street in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York, 718-271-1500. This 11-acre zoo in Flushing Meadows Park is nothing short of amazing. For only $8 per adult, $5 per child 3-12 and free admission for children under 3, you get a huge, exciting zoo full of, just for starters, pumas, sea lions, bears, porcupines, alligators, even owls and the bald eagle! This beautiful expanse of wildlife, which rivals any other zoo, is hiding in plain sight right here in Flushing, Queens - and at $26 for a family of 4, it’s a downright crime not to visit the place.
- Museum of the Moving Image, 35 Avenue at 37 Street, Astoria, NY, 718-777-6888. Again, right here in Queens, sits a treasure that’s also a bargain. This is the only museum of its kind in the entire nation, it is completely focused on all types of moving images - and it features movies, TV, games, digital art, and online exhibits, exploring every aspect of them. This is a perfect place for families; there are screenings of children’s movies, behind the scenes programs, even hands-on events for kids, such as claymation workshops and flip-book making. Many family events are included in the cost of museum admission, while others may cost an additional $5-$10 (estimate only) materials fee per participant. The cost to visit this unique destination? Only $10 per adult and $5 for kids 3-18, with free admission for kids under 3. Again, at only $30 for a family of 4, you’d be crazy to pass this one by.
